Exploring the Variety of Endodontic Files:

CICADA Endodontics offers a diverse range of endodontic file types, tailored to meet various dental requirements. Our selection includes:

  • Flex R File
  • Safety H Files
  • Rotary File System

Flex R File: The development of the Flex R File revolutionized endodontic procedures. Initially, Dr. Powell identified issues with straight stainless steel file tips, particularly in navigating curved canals and avoiding canal transportation. The Flex R File, with its reduced tip angle, was designed to more accurately follow the natural curvature of canals, thereby enhancing safety and precision.

This file’s unique triangular design and reduced cross-sectional area (37.5% smaller compared to a square file of the same size) contribute to its exceptional flexibility. It features a parabolic tip that minimizes elastic deformation, evenly distributing cutting forces and reducing the risk of canal transportation.

The Flex R File is renowned for its balanced force technique, significantly reducing procedural accidents with its rounded, safer tip. Its sharper edges and minimized negative rake angle allow for greater control over both strength and flexibility, optimizing the cutting process. This file operates in an anti-clockwise rotary motion, effectively removing more debris from the canals and enhancing the overall efficiency of endodontic treatments.

Safety H Files:

Safety H Files, created by Buchanan and introduced by Kerr Manufacturing in 1993, have become a standard in endodontic therapy, particularly in retreatment procedures. These files, which are available in ISO sizes ranging from 15 to 40, stand out because they have modified tips and non-cutting sides that significantly lower the risk of ledging in curved canals.

The design of Safety H Files is centered on safety and efficiency. Their non-cutting, smooth edges are specifically crafted to navigate the canal’s curvature without removing excess material from the canal walls. This feature makes them highly effective for precise filing and reviewing applications.

The unique spiral design of the flute enhances its depth and length from tip to handle, contributing to the file’s effectiveness. With an ‘S’ shaped cross-section, these files, often referred to as S files, are designed for linear motion, ensuring a smooth canal preparation process.

In terms of identification, the color coding system for endo files, which includes K-files, H-files, and Reamers, remains consistent, facilitating easy recognition during procedures. These files are available in three lengths – 21mm, 25mm, and 31mm – and come in nine different color variants: Pink, Gray, Purple, White, Yellow, Red, Blue, Green, and Black, providing a comprehensive range for various dental endodontic needs.

Gutta- Percha Points for all the files comes either in percentage or in points which could either be like in 2%, 4% and 6%.

Paper Points are used to dry the root canal post preparation and irrigation. These files are highly absorbent, sterile and merely contain any adhesive. These points come in 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6.

Rotary File System:

The Rotary File System, introduced in early 2001, represents a significant advancement in endodontic file technology. Characterized by its cylindrical or modified cylindrical shape, this system primarily operates in a rotational motion, differing from the traditional reciprocating motion.

This innovative system is utilized with an endodontic handpiece and is executed in a specific order to maximize efficiency. The files in this system are crafted from a variety of materials, including carbon, stainless steel, and notably nickel-titanium alloys (NiTi Files), known for their flexibility and strength.

The adoption of the Rotary File System in dental endodontics has been widespread, largely due to its contribution to safer and more consistent outcomes. Its design enhances overall efficiency and simplifies procedural complexities, making it a preferred choice for many endodontic professionals.

NiTi File System in Endodontics:

The introduction of the NiTi File System marked a new era in the field of endodontics. Comprising a nickel-titanium alloy, these endo files exhibit remarkable elasticity, enabling them to regain their original shape after significant deformation. This flexibility allows NiTi files to adapt to the curvature of root canals, enhancing their ability to conform to varied canal shapes while offering increased resistance to fractures.

NiTi files, typically engine-driven, tapered, and pointed, are indispensable in endodontic procedures for shaping and preparing root canals. Their durability surpasses that of traditional stainless steel files, offering enhanced longevity and reduced wear.

Specialized cross-sectional designs and tip configurations, among other distinctive design elements, further increase the efficiency of NiTi files. Additionally, elements like the helix angle vary along the file’s working surface, complemented by features such as measuring stops, lines, and tapers.

A unique characteristic of NiTi files is their superelasticity. Under stress, they undergo a martensitic transformation and, upon stress release, revert to their austenite form, maintaining their original shape. Modern rotary motor advancements have further optimized these files, improving torque control and automatic reversal functions, which in turn reduce the likelihood of file breakage. Moreover, their biocompatibility and anti-corrosive properties make them a preferred choice in endodontic therapy. Innovations like Radial Lands have even expanded their use, allowing for 360° reaming motions.

These properties of NiTi files have made a shift for the clinicians from using high torque instruments such as stainless steel to low torque instruments such as NiTi files which are more efficient and safe as compared to other file systems.

Profile – Series 29 in Endodontic Files:

Developed by Stephen Buchanan, the Profile – Series 29 has become a noteworthy addition in the endodontic file systems. These instruments feature a graduated tip diameter (d1), which increases with the file size. Specifically, the series includes 0.02 mm for sizes 6-10, 0.05 mm for sizes 10-60, and 0.1 mm for larger sizes. The differentiation in tip diameters is meticulously designed, with variations such as a 50% difference for sizes 10-15, and a 9% difference for sizes 55-60.

Notably, the smallest size in the Profile 29 series corresponds to the ISO size 10, expanding the range of available sizes for endodontic procedures.

These files are offered both in stainless steel and as NiTi hand instruments. They closely resemble the NiTi “U” files, characterized by their narrow 0.02mm tips. The distribution of these instruments is strategically organized, featuring a higher concentration of smaller-sized instruments and fewer options as the sizes increase, ensuring a comprehensive range for various endodontic needs.

Profile GT Rotary Files (Great Taper) in Endodontic Practices:

The Profile GT Rotary Files, known for their ‘Great Taper’, were innovatively introduced by Dentsply Maillefer. These files have been specially designed for cleaning and shaping within endodontic practices.

The Profile GT series is distinguished by its range of taper sizes, which include 0.06, 0.08, 0.10, and 1.12 mm, accommodating a variety of canal sizes. As per Buchanan’s insights, these files are tailored to precisely fit specific canal dimensions. Their unique design features variably pitched, radical lands, and a clockwise cut U-blade, which ensures a reaming-like efficiency at the shank, while maintaining the strength of a K-file at the tip. The flute diameter in these files is typically set at 1.0mm, a specification that aids in safely limiting coronal enlargement during endodontic procedures.

ProTaper Rotary System in Endodontic Treatments:

The ProTaper Rotary System is a key component in modern endodontic treatments, consisting of six precision instruments: three for shaping and three for finishing.

Shaping Files:

  • S-X (Shaping File X)
  • S-1
  • S-2

Finishing Files:

  • F-1
  • F-2
  • F-3

S-X (Shaping File X): The S-X file stands out for its specialized design tailored for optimal canal shaping. It measures 19mm in length, making it ideal for accessing restricted areas within the root canal. This file features a D0 diameter of 0.19mm at its partially active tip and extends to a D14 diameter of 1.2mm, with 14 mm of cutting blades. The S-X file is characterized by a more aggressive taper from D0 to D9 compared to its counterparts, enabling precise shaping in varied root canal scenarios. From D6 to D9, its cross-sectional diameters increase from 0.5mm to 1.1mm. This makes it very good at shaping canals in shorter roots and helping to move canals from external root concavities, especially for more complex coronal shaping in longer roots.

S-1 and S-2 Shaping Files in the ProTaper System:

The S-1 and S-2 files are integral to the ProTaper Rotary System, each tailored for specific stages of canal preparation in endodontic treatments.

  • S-1 File: This file has a D0 diameter of 0.17mm and a maximum diameter of 1.2mm at its active tip, along with 14mm of cutting blades. The S-1 file is specifically designed to shape the coronal third of the canal, ensuring precise preparation and widening in this critical area.

  • S-2 File: With a D0 diameter of 0.20mm and the same maximal diameter and blade length as the S-1, the S-2 file takes over to enlarge and shape the middle third of the canal. Together, the S-1 and S-2 files work in tandem to effectively prepare two-thirds of the canal, focusing on both the coronal and apical thirds.

These shaping files are engineered to increase flexibility and cutting efficiency, making them particularly effective in navigating tight and curved canals. Their design minimizes the need for multiple recapitulations to reach the desired canal length. Additionally, they play a crucial role in reducing torsional loads, fatigue, and the risk of file breakage, thereby enhancing the overall safety and efficacy of the endodontic procedure.

Finishing Files F-1, F-2, F-3 in the ProTaper System:

In the realm of endodontic procedures, the ProTaper System’s finishing files F-1, F-2, and F-3 play a critical role in addressing the intricacies of canal anatomy, particularly in the apical third.

  • F-1 File: This file has a D0 diameter of 0.20mm, with a taper variation from 0.7mm between D0 and D3. The design allows for a decreased taper from D4 to D14, enhancing its flexibility and making it ideal for finishing the apical third of the canal with precision.

  • F-2 File: With a D0 diameter of 0.25mm, the F-2 file follows a similar design principle, featuring a taper of 0.8mm between D0 and D3. Its decreasing taper towards the distal end of the file allows for subtle expansion and shaping of the middle third of the canal.

  • F-3 File: The F-3 file, with the largest D0 diameter of 0.30mm and a taper of 0.9mm, offers even greater flexibility, achieved by a reduced core compared to its counterparts. This file is especially suited for completing the finish of the apical third, adapting to the canal’s curvature and diameter.

Typically, only one of these finishing files is required to complete the preparation of the apical third of the canal, selected based on the specific anatomical requirements of each canal. These files are designed to not only finish the apical portion effectively but also to progressively shape the middle third, ensuring a comprehensive and meticulous endodontic treatment.

Protapers have a convex triangular cross-section that reduces the contact area between the file and dentine. The pitch and the helical angle have balanced the cutting efficiency.

Generally, only 3 protaper files are required to produce a fully tapered canal that exhibits uniform shape over length.

V Taper Rotary File System in Endodontic Procedures:

The V Taper Rotary File System, a significant innovation in endodontic procedures, includes three distinct series of files designed for large, medium, and small canals.

This system is particularly acclaimed for its ability to create deeper apical shapes and conservative coronal preparations that closely mimic natural canal anatomy. The V Taper files excel in providing improved access for critical steps such as irrigation, cleaning, and 3-D obturation, enhancing the overall effectiveness of endodontic treatments.

A key feature of the V Taper system is its ability to eliminate ‘taper lock’, a common challenge in endodontics. Its uniquely designed cross-section enables efficient deep-hole reaming in root canals. Made from high-quality NiTi, these files are engineered to reduce the risk of breakage, and their short handles offer better visibility and access during procedures.

The V Taper system stands out for its ease of use, safety, and efficiency, offering a cost-effective alternative to other NiTi rotary files. It simplifies the root canal treatment of molars and premolars, typically requiring only 2-3 files to achieve optimal results. This streamlined approach not only conserves resources but also enhances productivity in endodontic practices.

Quantec Files in Endodontic Canal Preparation:

Quantec files play a pivotal role in the field of endodontic canal preparation. Their strategic positioning allows for the efficient opening of the orifice and facilitates the penetration of irrigants throughout the canal. The design of these files is optimized to work on different areas of the canal: larger tapers are effective towards the orifice, while smaller tapers navigate more easily towards the apex, particularly enhancing their function in the coronal third of the canal.

The Quantec NiTi file system boasts a range of tapers from 0.02mm to 0.06mm, accommodating various ISO tip sizes. Additionally, the Quantec flare series extends this range with tapers of 0.08mm, 0.10mm, and 0.12mm, catering to a wide array of canal dimensions.

Designed with precision, the rake angle of these files is such that it gently shaves the dentine, ensuring minimal damage compared to more aggressive scraping methods. The flute design incorporates a 30° helical angle, extending beyond the cutting blades, which enhances the efficiency of the cutting process. Furthermore, the wide radical lands of the Quantec files are instrumental in preventing crack formation in the blades and adeptly aid in navigating the instrument around the canal’s curvature.

There are two tip designs of Quantec files i.e SC – Safe Cutting Tip and LX – Non-Cutting Tip.

SC – Safe Cutting Tip is designed for small, tight canals, narrow curvature, and calcified canals. Then the tip approaches the curve, a balance takes place between the file deflections and cutting.

LX – Non-Cutting Tip act as a pilot in the canal and deflecting around severe curvature in less constriction of canals. These files are recommended for enlarging the body and coronal segments and managing the delicate apical region

These increasing size of the tapers from 0.08, 0.10 and 0.12 with tip sizes of 150 25 are designed such to quickly and safely shape the coronal third of the canal. The varying sizes of taper are used to prepare single canal.

Golden – Mediums (Intermediate File) in Endodontic Therapy:

The Golden – Mediums, a series of intermediate files, represent a significant advancement in the realm of endodontic therapy. These files were specifically developed to mitigate common procedural errors, such as ledging, zipping, transportation of the apical foramen, and perforation, often caused by uncontrolled dentine removal. Their introduction has been instrumental in enabling smoother and more controlled progress during endodontic procedures.

The Golden – Mediums series includes files numbered 12, 17, 22, 27, 32, and 37, forming an essential part of the flexo file range. These intermediate files are designed to bridge the gap between smaller and larger file sizes, providing a graduated approach to canal shaping and preparation. This range ensures that endodontic professionals have the necessary tools to address a wide variety of canal anatomies and complexities, enhancing both safety and effectiveness in endodontic treatments.

K3 File System in Advanced Endodontic Procedures:

The K3 File System, an innovative creation by Dr. John and Dr. McSpadden, is a cornerstone in advanced endodontic procedures. This system is renowned for its range of taper files, offering a versatile toolkit for endodontic professionals.

The system’s taper files are available in a variety of sizes, all adhering to taper sizes of 0.02, 0.04, and 0.06. Specifically, the 0.02 taper instruments range from No. 15 through No. 60, available in lengths of 21mm, 25mm, and 30mm. The same size range and lengths are available for the 0.04 and 0.06 taper instruments, allowing for comprehensive canal shaping across a wide range of root canal anatomies.

A key feature of the K3 files is their positive rake angle, which enhances cutting efficiency. In addition, the carefully calibrated core diameter significantly boosts the flexibility of these instruments along their entire length. Each file is designed with a safe-ended tip to minimize the risk of over-instrumentation, and the variable pitch of the flutes helps prevent the undesirable screwing effect. The strategic design of the core and outer diameter at the tip fortifies the file, providing strength where it’s most needed, while the increasing flute depth towards the upper part of the taper augments both flexibility and strength.

K Files are made up of a wire of cutting into a tapered instrument ending at the tip giving its tip a square cross-section. These can be used in filling action or in reaming action. When the file is locked inside the canal the clockwise rotation it unwinds and gives ductile type fracture whereas in anti-clockwise rotation it leads to sudden brittle fracture.

K Reamers have a triangular cross-section with loose spirals around the flute. They have a reaming motion. These are used to ream canals, they cut the canals by inserting into the canal by twisting clockwise one quarter to half turn and then withdrawing i.e penetrating, rotating and retracting.

K – Flex File in Endodontic Canal Preparation:

The K – Flex File is a specialized instrument in endodontic canal preparation, known for its unique rhomboid-shaped cross-section. This innovative design grants it enhanced flexibility, a critical feature in navigating the complexities of root canals.

One of the distinguishing characteristics of the K – Flex File is its combination of twisted and alternating sharp cutting edges. This design not only increases its cutting efficiency but also significantly improves debris removal capabilities. The obtuse, non-cutting edges of the file contribute to this efficiency, effectively reducing the accumulation of debris and minimizing the risk of canal obstruction.

These files are particularly effective due to the obtuse angles of their rhomboid shape, which facilitate extensive debris removal. This feature is crucial in maintaining canal cleanliness during the endodontic procedure. Additionally, the K – Flex File is designed to lower the risk of over-filling in the canal, further enhancing the safety and precision of endodontic treatments.

Flexo File in Endodontic File Systems:

The Flexo File plays a significant role in modern endodontic file systems, distinguished by its triangular cross-sectional shape. This geometry imparts a sharper cutting edge, enhancing the file’s efficiency in canal shaping and debris removal.

Crafted from high-grade stainless steel, Flexo Files are notable for their lack of a cutting tip, a design choice that prioritizes safety and control during use. The inclusion of 29 spirals along the length of these files greatly increases their capacity for debris removal, a crucial aspect of endodontic cleanliness and success.

One of the defining characteristics of the Flexo File is its extraordinary flexibility, coupled with a high resistance to fracture. This resilience is vital in the demanding environment of root canal treatments. Additionally, the cutting angles are meticulously designed, set at 30° at the tip and 45° at the working end, to optimize cutting efficiency and maneuverability within the canal.

Twisted Files

The first NiTi fluted files produced through plastic deformation are Twisted Files. It has a sizing tip from 25 to 50 and tapers from 0.04mm to 0.12mm. It is made from R – Phase™ technology. In these files, the NiTi alloys are twisted instead of being ground.

Self Adjusting Files

Self Adjusting Files are designed with a hollow adaptive design with the help of Laser Miller Niti Lattice and Cardiac Stents. The abrasive design has the ability to become extremely flexible, pliable and adaptive. It does not impose its shape on the canal rather it complies with the canal’s original shape. These are elastically compressible, thin-walled pointed cylinder with 1.5mm in diameter with NiTi lattice. These files are capable to achieve complete 3D root canal shaping and cleaning. SAF applies continuous pressure along the entire circumference of the root canal wall. It has an excellent adaptation to irregular canal anatomy.

RaCe

RaCe stands for Reamer with Alternating Cutting Edges. RaCe combines with SS and NiTi alloy for better versatility and is an active cutting instrument. CICADA Medcial was designed like reamers with loosely wound flutes which have less contact with the inner wall of the canal. Hence, less screwing effect. It reduces frictional resistance during rotation to a greater extent.

The RaCe has a cross-section of straight-sided triangle which helps in better cutting effect. The sharpness of the non-cutting tip gives flexibility, less torque, and more control. It helps in preventing canal transportation. The RaCe gives in greater tapered preparation and is less time-consuming.

NeoEndo Files

NeoEndo Files is a combination of Shape and Controlled Memory. It utilizes a heat treatment property which makes it a tough file with unique flexibility. The flutes of the files do not open up when the stress level is reached. It has a triangular cross-section.

NeoEndo Files should be used gently without exerting pressure. While using NeoEndo Files the canals should be irrigated properly before engaging the files. These files are taken passively to the point of resistance and then are brushed out from the canal.

These files come in various sizes for narrow, medium and wide canals with different sizes and taper sizes.

WaveOne Single File System:

WaveOne NiTi Single File System is specially designed as it works in a reciprocal motion in a reversed balanced force action.

These files are manufactured with M-Wire technology improving strength which helps it to resist cyclic fatigue. The files have a modified convex triangular cross-section at the tip end as well as in the coronal end. Hence improving the flexibility. The tips help in following the canal curvature accurately.

These files come in three sizes i.e Small files with ISO 21 with a continuous taper of 6%, Primary files with ISO 25 with an apical taper of 8% which reduces towards the coronal end and Large files with ISO 40 with an apical taper of 8% that reduces towards the coronal end.

Hero Shaper

Hero Shaper is micro mega NiTi files that were initially designed with a slightly negative rake angle and were neutral. But the advancement of NiTi files and they were redesigned with a positive rake angle hence giving them a nice cutting efficiency. It was originally known as Hero 642 which has now been renamed as Hero Shaper.

Hero Shaper comes in two sizes with various lengths and colours. It comes in red, blue and yellow in colour. It comes in two flute lengths i.e 12mm and 16mm with 21mm, 25-29mm and 21-25mm. It comes in two taper sizes of 0.06 and 0.04.

Red denotes n 25, blue denotes n30 and yellow denotes n20.

Hero Shaper work on up and down movement with circumferential fillings. It irrigates the canal between the passage of successive instruments. Files have 3 edged tips with positive rake angle and big inner core for excellent resistance of breakage. These instruments unwind to prevent fracture.

Hero Shapers have better-centring ability as compared to other files.

The cross-section of Hero Shaper is similar to H-files but without radical lands. These files have elasticity in rotation with high flexibility.

HyFlex Rotary Files

Cicada Rotary Files works on the property of thermo-mechanical treatment. It retains its shape after bending. It has good superior canal tracking ability. It regains its shape after sterilization. These files are used to enlarge the canal to prepare it for irrigation and obturation in continuous rotation motion or if required in reciprocal motion as well. The files are available in different sizes depending on the tip size of the file. It also has colour codes to indicate the degree of the taper. The new NiTi heat-treated files are manufactured making it fracture-resistant and flexible. These files can be used multiple times and can be restored during autoclaving.

Cicada Files are of various types:

Cicada™ EDM NiTi Files

These files belong to the 5th generation of the root canal files. In the process of making of Cicada ™ EDM files, the surface material evaporates when the spark is generated. Hence, making the file stronger and fracture-resistant. These properties help in reducing the number of files required during the cleaning and shaping of the root canal treatment keeping the root canal anatomy intact.

Cicada™ CM NiTi Files

Cicada™ Controlled Memory Files are manufactured in a process that controls the material’s memory. These are extremely flexible files, enabling the ability to follow the anatomy of the root canal very closely, reducing the risk of ledging, transportation or perforation. They can be bent and are very useful for the root canals with abrupt curvatures. This property of the file to reshape it according to the need of the curvature helps in root canal treatment plus it can be straightened by heat treatment. It also strengthens the file making it resistant to cyclical fatigue.

Cicada™ GPF NiTi Files

These files ensure the optimal shaping of the glide path due to the controlled memory.

Cicada™ NT NiTi Rotary Files

These files are designed for specific clinical usage such as calcified canals, straight canals, retreatments and removing GP. They are available in two taper variation i.e 0.06 and 0.04 with 21mm, 25mm and 31mm length.
